The principal focus of Dr. George's research is how social factors are related to health and well-being in later life. Primary interests include social variables as risk factors on the course and outcome of mental and physical illnesses, and the role of social factors in help-seeking and health service utilization. Social factors of primary interest include stress (both acute and chronic), social support, and socioeconomic status. Her research also includes examination of various subgroups of older populations, including caregivers, African-Americans, rural residents, and women. Dr. George is co-principal investigator of the Duke Established Populations for Epidemiologic Studies of the Elderly (EPESE).
