Dr. Clipp's research over the past decade has focused on psychosocial factors in health and aging that are clinically relevant, with particular interest in longitudinal patterns of quality of life in the context of chronic illness. Examples of this work include the National Caregiving Study, a longitudinal, prospective study of 2300+ families caring for non-institutionalized elderly individuals with progressive dementia. In this study, informal costs and quality of life are examined as key factors related to caregivers' decisions to seek institutional placement for their demented family members. A second project uses longitudinal data from the Duke site of the NIA-funded EPESE study to examine trajectories of self-rated health, physical functioning, cognitive functioning, and depression among community-dwelling older men. Dr. Clipp also works in the area of gero-oncology with ongoing studies of social support in prostate cancer, and multi-risk factor intervention among elderly men and women newly diagnosed with colon polyps. She also is participating in a multidisciplinary effort to develop a comprehensive assessment approach to the older cancer patient.
