Subject: Telnet blocked at firewall

Attention geri system users:

As part of the ever increasing security measures being adopted at Duke,
the Medical Center has blocked telnet access from the internet to Medical
Center computers. If you need to establish an interactive session or
an ftp session with one of the geri system UNIX computers from a computer
that is not directly connected to the Medical Center's network, you need
to use an SSH client. The one we recommend is from F-Secure which can be
downloaded from:

http://www.oit.duke.edu/site/software/fsecure.html

SSH is far more secure the telnet and regular ftp because it encrypts your
data before transmitting it. For the same reason, you should also be using
SSH from your office computer. Although no date has been set, the geri
system will have telnet turned off completely at some time in the future.

You will need your acpub/NetID and password to get this software. An
acpub/NetID is available at no charge to all Duke staff, and all staff
members should have one. Check with the OIT Help Desk at 684-2200 or
help@acpub.duke.edu to see if you already have one. More information can
be had at http://www.oit.duke.edu/helpdesk/netid/
