                       New Password Policy

Duke security policy requires that all pc's be configured to enforce
the following password characteristics:

a. 180 day expiration
b. 8 character minimum
c. recall of password history so a password cannot be reused more
   frequently then every 3 years
d. account lockout period of 30 minutes if there are 10 consecutive
   failed login attempts

On Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005 I will start visiting each pc to make the
necessary changes. As there are 52 computers that need to be reconfigured,
it will take a while for me to get to all of them. Please be patient.

14 days prior to the expiration of your password, you will begin to
receive warnings. You must change your password BEFORE it expires, or you
may end up being locked out of your pc. When you change your password on
your pc, you should also change it on the geri UNIX system to keep from
having yet another password to remember. Instructions for changing your
UNIX password can be found at :

   http://www.geri.duke.edu/csl/change_pwd.html.

Some of you are receiving this message because you have an account
on the geri UNIX system even though your pc is supported by another
department. If that is the case, please ignore this announcement.
