Attention geri users:
Please read the message below regarding a conflict betweek the Kerio
Personal Firewall (KPF) and MS Office & Windows Media Player. Even though
the message specifies MS Office 2003, one user has reported a conflict with
MS Office 2002 SP3 (aka Office XP) which was resolved when Kerio 4.2.0 was
uninstalled. The manifestation was an inability to print.
It was accompanied by a generic and unhelpful error message.
What you need to do:
1. Right click on the Kerio icon (blue shield with white stripe) in the
task bar tray in the lower right corner of your Windows desktop. Select
'About'. If the System Service version is 4.2.0, you could run into the
conflict.
2. If it is an earlier version, follow the instructions below to turn off
Automatic Updates, unless you have such an old version that you do not
even have that feature.
3. If it is 4.2.0, right click on the Kerio icon again and select 'Exit'.
4. Uninstall Kerio - single click on the 'Start' button in the lower left
of your Windows desktop; single click on the 'Control Panel' icon;
double click on 'Add or Remove Programs; single click on 'Kerio
Personal Firewall'; click on the 'Remove' button; follow the prompts to
remove the program; if you are not prompted to restart your computer,
do so anyway.
4. Download and install a working version of Kerio (v. 4.1.2) from:
http://www.geri.duke.edu/csl/kerio412.exe
5. Follow the instructions below to turn off Automatic Updates ASAP so
you do not automatically get updated and have to do it all over again.

Subject: [CLIF] Kerio 4.2.0 Issue
Kerio 4.2.0 Issue
The Duke distributed version of Kerio is currently set to Automatically
Update, if you have not turned this feature off Kerio will eventually
upgrade to version 4.2.0. Unfortunately there is a bug in the new
Host-based Intrusion Protection System feature that crashes both Windows
Office 2003 applications and Windows Media Player. The recommended solution
is to roll back to 4.1.2 and turn off automatic updates until a fix is
released. However, users can disable HIPS to temporarily avoid the issue.
Instructions for both are provided below.
Kerio is working on a resolution to the issue, but there is no ETA. They are
also going to release a version of 4.1.3 with automatic updates turned off
for our distribution as soon as they have it ready.
A final note, version 4.1.3 is the last version with support for 98, ME, and
NT according to the release notes.
How to Turn off Automatic Updates.
---------------------------------------------
Double Click on the Kerio Tray Icon. Make sure Overview is selected in the
left hand column, and choose the Preferences Tab along the top. Uncheck
'Automatically check for updates'
Restart Kerio
