DHTS Blocks Email Relaying at Firewall

The following information applies to you ONLY if:

1. You are a RoadRunner user
   AND
2. You use the geri system from home as your outgoing server for your
email program, eg. Eudora, Outlook, Outlook Express

To further secure the medical center's network, on Jan. 26, 2005 DHTS
(formerly known as MCIS) will be closing the port in the medical center
firewall that has allowed you to use the geri system as your outgoing
email server. If you absolutely must use a medical center server as your
outgoing email server, follow the instructions

here.
I know of NO good reason why anyone absolutely has to use a Duke system as their outgoing server, therefore, I recommend that you use the server provided by your Internet Service Provider. This will be much simpler, because you will not have to implement the security configuration described in the above web site. The smtp server for Road Runner is smtp-server.nc.rr.com. If you have already sucessfully implemented these same security changes for use on the geri system, you can use the instructions at http://www.geri.duke.edu/csl/unconfig_tls.html to back out of the changes that were made. You will still need to change the name of the outgoing server from geri.duke.edu to the name provided by your ISP. You will still recieve mail @geri.duke.edu, and people to whom you send email will still see that it comes from 'you@geri.duke.edu'. When they reply to your email it will go back to your geri address. Let Irv know if you have any problems, Released: Jan 18, 2005
